Hamster Wheel Hell!

by Cheri on April 7, 2010

Why don’t we do what we know we should do?

Just about everyone I know can recite, in a flash, all the reasons they are not doing the things that they want to be doing. They can identify these reasons better then they could pick out their family in a line up!

I bet you are one of these people too.  However, you probably think you are unique.  Sorry to burst your bubble, but mostly likely I can predict what your reasons are for NOT doing things you want to do.

Do you recognize any of these?

Hamster Wheel Hell

“I keep getting side tracked.  I really do want ________ but other things keep coming up that are more important.

“I just need to know a little bit more about ________. I need to do a little more research. Once I have ALL the information I need I will be able to get down to work!”

“I visualize it all the time.  Isn’t it just supposed to happen?”

“Oops. I think I’ve headed in the wrong direction. I better turn around and do that OTHER thing. I’ve probably chosen the wrong thing to focus my attention on right now.”

“If it weren’t for my husband/wife/kids/parents/boss/pets/sister-in-law/the government/neighbors,etc, etc, etc, I could get _________ done.  They are always throwing me a curve ball!”

“I will get to it tomorrow.  When the weather changes.  After the holidays.  After football season.  When Mercury is no longer in retrograde.  When PIGS FLY!”

Have any of these excuses ever come out of your mouth?  If so, ask yourself, were they legitimate or were they manufactured excuses?

Legitimate means…well legitimate or valid.  Things that can not be avoided and thus hamper you from doing what you need to do.  Manufactured means..you make them up or perhaps you MILK a legitimate excuse (I’m so guilty of this one!)

Here is where you have to be honest with yourself.

You have to determine if the reasons that you keep giving yourself for not doing both what you need and want to do are justifiable or whether they are rationalizations. Easier said than done.

But I have a hunch.  I bet most of us know when we are treading over into the Making Excuses arena.

Here’s the skinny…if you are repeating over and over some form of excuse listed above about not doing the thing or things you need to do and what you want is STILL NOT HAPPENING…then you are on Hell’s Hamster Wheel.

You are going round and round in circles, getting exhausted and frustrated and disgusted with yourself and not accomplishing a thing.

Hell’s Hamster Wheel! YIKES.

So here’s your homework.

1. Make plans to be at my live event on May 19th in Asheville for another of my now-famous businesswoman’s luncheons. This time’s theme is “Knock out Your Excuses”. I will go deeper on this topic and help get of that infernal wheel.

2.  Begin to notice, as non-judgmentally as possible, what excuses you have for not taking the action you want/need to be taking. Write them down. Try not to decide if they are legitimate or rationalization. Just keep a record.

3.  Sign up to receive my newsletter and or blog so you can Keep reading my newsletters because I will have more info on how to Break Out of Old Mindsets about excuses.

Stop spinning around and around and around.  It’s time to get off the Hamster Wheel.  Woo-Hoo!

Signs, Signs, Everywhere There’s Signs!

by Cheri on March 21, 2010

Messages, or signs, can come from just about anywhere.

This morning I was drying my hair, thinking about a meeting I was going to for Cupcakes for Cures (a way-cool fundraiser for cancer you’ll want to check out), thinking about my life and there it was. A really cool sign!

laverne LWhat was it, you may ask? It was a strand of my hair, sticking to the wall over my sink,  in a perfectly scripted “L”. A real Laverne and Shirley “L”.

There was no doubt in my mind that it was a sign. I knew exactly what it meant. It meant LOVE LIFE, LIVE-FULLY and LET THINGS GO. I knew this in an instant.

Then I saw what I was doing; letting a hair that was stuck on my wall…oweeeee…give me a message. What a nut!!!

But isn’t that what a sign really is? An everyday occurrence that is somehow otherwise special?

What if I grew an eggplant with a nose? I might ask myself “Where am I sticking my nose these days where it doesn’t belong?” Or “Is there something that I’m about to take on that smells bad?” Or lastly, “Perhaps I should listen that old Jimmy Durante hit, As Time Goes By?”

eggplant with nose

Or what if I grew a rutabaga that looks like Snow White’s Wicked Witch. YIKES. That might give me cause for pause!  Nuff Said.

Rutabaga Wicked Witch

After I saw my hair, I simply had to go to Google and see what I could find.  Could hair be a sign?

There were references to gray hair being a sign of stress, white hair meaning wisdom and no hair…well…there were all kinds of meanings. But no information on hair stuck in certain shapes.  There was nothing on hair alphabet or hair on walls.

Was my hair really a sign with a deep and profound meaning or simply a sign that I needed to kick my cleaning up a knotch or two?

Well I’m going for the former.  I’m sticking with my initial (and very certain) interpretation: LOVE LIFE, LIVE-FULLY and LET THINGS GO.

Tulips1 300x225 Signs, Signs, Everywhere Theres Signs!

What’s right in front of you that might be telling you something? Perhaps the leaves in the bottom of your tea cup? A song that keeps coming on the radio over and over? What about the shape of the spittle in the sink when you’re brushing your teeth or the oil stain pattern in your garage floor? Be open and who knows what you may see. Who knows what you may be reminded of. Way-Cool huh?

The Serenity Prayer on My Refrigerator

March 16, 2010

On my refrigerator is the serenity prayer.
It was put there at the suggestion of my daughter’s therapist who recommended that we refer to it when she is feeling frustrated with circumstances in her life.  But like most things that “show up” in one’s life, it’s most likely been put there to help me too.  Perhaps [...]

Fleas Can’t Live Under Water, but They Can Live in Texas

February 24, 2010

“Fleas can’t live under water, but they can live in Texas.”
This was the conversation I had at 4:00AM this morning with my son as we snuggled in bed.
He was having a hard time sleeping, most likely because his brain was so full of exciting ideas. So, in the middle of the night he came [...]

Taking Inspired Action

February 17, 2010

“Small deeds done are better than great deeds planned.”
~ Peter Marshall
I couldn’t agree more.
Since the end of 2009, when I made the commitment to myself to begin to do things differently because I wanted different results, I have formed several Mastermind groups.
A Mastermind is an intentional group that will boost one another, [...]

WWED: What Would Erma Do

February 16, 2010

I’m being needled  by voices in my head.
No, I don’t think I need to change my meds.  Rather, I think the voices are from what poets might call my muses.  Okay this may be a bit overstated since I don’t think my muses are descendants of Zeus.  But they are speaking to me in strange [...]

Ready, Fire, Aim! The trap of waiting for all to be perfect.

February 9, 2010

When is the right time to take action?
I seem to always think that the perfect time for some things is tomorrow.
Tomorrow I will go on a diet.  Tomorrow I will work on the finances.  Tomorrow I will make that difficult call.
Lately I’ve been working on my blog.  I have been spending a lot of time [...]

Change Something or Nothing Will Change

November 11, 2009

In October I went to Kendall Summerhawk’s Money, Marketing and the Soul Intensive in Tucson, Arizona.  This 4-day workshop was on how to market your business, understand more about your money mindset and make a plan for building a more profitable business.
I got a lot out of my time there…I’m sure that I will be [...]

Happiness is

October 28, 2009

From one of my favorite books…”how to be HAPPY, dammit: a cynic’s guide to spiritual happiness” by Karen Salmansohn

“Happiness is not about what happens to you, but how you choose to respond to what happens.  That’s why it’s called happiness no happenness – though it could be called hope-ness.  You must always leave room for [...]

Help! I’m Melting!: When Rotten Moods Won’t Go Away

October 1, 2009

I’ve been down lately.  Despite all of the wonderful things in my life, I’ve been like a dog sniffing out a mole in the ground…determined to find and focus on the things that aren’t going well.  Kind of sad, huh?
Why?  BECAUSE IT’S A HABIT!  For me, seeing the world as a glass that is half [...]
